Ethiopia’s Kenenisa wins Berlin Marathon in stunning fashion
Finfinne (Yeroo.Org) – Ethiopian great Kenenisa Bekele nearly broke the marathon World record, during a stunning comeback victory in the 2019 Berlin Marathon.
After falling back almost half a kilometer late in the race, Kenenisa leaped past his competitors in the final five kilometers, to finish in an astonishing 2:01:41
The dramatic finish resembled the last spectacular distance race in 2013 at the Great North Run, where Kenenisa staged a comeback victory over the former record holder Haile Gebrselassie and Mo Farah.
Adding this historic performance to his three Olympic gold medals, world records over 5,000 and 10,000meters, 11 World Cross Country titles, Kenenisa is cementing his legacy as one of the top 3 greatest distance runners in history.
Various international media outlets noted the significance of his newest achievement. NBC sports said Kenenisa has “restaked his claim as the greatest runner in history.” Meanwhile, the popular running journal, LetsRun.com, described Kenenisa as “The GOAT is back,” referring him as the “Greatest of all Time.”
In an interview, Kenenisa admitted to having several injury problems in recent years and during the race.
“I don’t give up…. I had a tight hamstring at 31K and had to slow down, but then recovered,” said Kenenisa.
